Basketball made dreams come true for Staley

University of South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley told a large audience at the Redemption World Outreach Center on Tuesday night that basketball helped shape her life.

The featured speaker at the Potential Youth Foundation/Sid Wilson Foundation Coaches 4 Character "Young Ladies Night" spoke of her humble beginnings, growing up in the projects of North Philadelphia and how basketball helped shape her life.

"To ask why the game has been so good to me almost seems ungrateful, so I don't ask out loud," said Staley, a three time Olympic Gold Medal winner.

Tee It Up a huge success

We are pleased to announce that our third annual Potential Youth Foundation Tee It Up Golf Tournament raised over $13,000, almost doubling last year's total. Special thanks to Dave Mega and Brian Gordner from Cherokee Valley, Lee Mosteller and John Deck from Marriott Greenville, Jimmy Singleton from Pepsi Cola, Watson Nealy from Budweiser, and our many raffle prize donors, hole sponsors, and golfers. The first place team prize was won by a Furman Company foursome, second place by a Marriott Greenville group, Terrific weather, Cherokee Valley hospitality, and a energetic group of hostesses made for a very enjoyable day. Thanks to everyone for helping us teach youth that education and character do make a difference!

We are proud to introduce the formation of the Big Bus Alliance. It is a unique collaborative effort. Young Transportation out of Asheville has generously donated eight beautiful 55 passenger buses for our Potential Youth Foundation Sid Wilson Foundation Coaches 4 Character Series. Liability insurance is included. The Potential Youth Foundation is funding and managing the program. Dinner is provided by Marriott Greenville on the buses for 8-12 different non profits and Title 1 schools who, like us, emphasize character education to youth. The Spinx Company will cover gasoline costs. The impact of the Big Bus Alliance will be that 440 participants - mostly students - will be able to attend our programs that otherwise would not be able to do so.

Greenville Tech has graciously given the Potential Youth Foundation two scholarships designated for students who are part of organizations involved in the Big Bus Alliance. Each participating organization will be allowed to nominate deserving high school seniors who attended at least two of the four Coaches 4 Character programs. A committee will then select the two recipients who will receive our first Big Bus Alliance scholarships to Greenville Tech. The announcement will be made this spring after our last Coaches 4 Character program.

So the gist of all this should be clear: the Upstate Community - in this case led by Tom Crouch and Young Transportation, Lee Mosteller and Marriott Greenville, Stewart Spinks and the Spinx Company, and Dr. Keith Miller and Greenville Tech - understands the value of character education for students. We at Potential Youth Foundation appreciate their support as we emphasize to our youth that education and character do make a difference!

PARTHENIA FILLS ACADEMIC COORDINATOR POSITION

Parthenia Luke Robinson has been named the new Academic Coordinator for the Potential Youth Foundation Learning Center. Parthenia earned her Psychology degree from Furman University and is presently working on her Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina. With a background of experience in psychology, social work, case management, mental health, and mentoring, Parthenia is obviously the right person for the job. Her focus will be on managing the after school program with an emphasis on relationship building, homework assistance, basic computer skills, tutoring, grade monitoring, and ACT/SAT prep.

Former Academic Coordinator Sheronda Witter, also a Furman graduate, has assumed the position of Potential Youth Foundation Director of Marketing and Recruiting. She and Parthenia will be working closely to impact the lives of youth in our community.
